Breaking news here in Fort Myers: Josh Beckett just walked off the mound with pitching coach John Farrell and trainer Mike Reinold after taking a few warm-up tosses prior to his scheduled start against the Florida Marlins here at City of Palms Park.

The Sox have reported that Beckett suffered from lower back spasms after he lost his footing on the mound during warm-ups. Doesn't sound like anything too dire...but more later.

Also, an interesting not from the San Diego Union-Tribune's Tom Krasovicin today's Stay Classy San Diego paper concerning Coco Crisp and the Padres sudden need for a centerfielder. The injury-prone Jim Edmonds has torn his calf and may be out for at least three weeks, and Padres officials had to already be wondering what exactly they were going to get out of Edmonds production-wise this season.

[Kevin] Towers swapped e-mails with Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein on Friday, but it's doubtful the Padres will strongly pursue Coco Crisp, who apparently has lost his job to Jacoby Ellsbury. For one, Crisp is out of the lineup because of an injury. Two, Epstein hasn't put him on the trade block. Three, the Padres believe Epstein would ask for advanced prospects such as Matt Antonelli or Chase Headley. “We're not going to move those guys,” Towers said.
