Sights and sounds of spring training this morning: Manny Ramirez, who honestly does look like he's in the best shape of his career with the Sox after working it out at API in Tempe, Arizona this winter, dousing himself with some generous sprays of cologne before heading out for some early hacks in the cages. around 8:30 a.m.
The cologne of choice for our mercurial left fielder: Sexual by
Michel Germain for Men which retails for about $50.99 a bottle. It is a spicy, sweet, powdery, strong, refined smell to please any woman around you, according to the web site www.fragrancex.com.
I guess if you smell good then you hit good...
Also thanks to the astute reader (alright, so it was my girlfriend Alyssa) who correctly wrote that I should have said it was some sights and smells from Sox spring training. Unfortunately I am one of the few human beings on this planet who was born without a sense of smell so mentioning the fragances of Fort Myers isn't always at the top of my list.
Also on my top list of fun items from today:
--David Ortiz, while taking batting practice yelled to Jonathan Papelbon as he walked by: "Hey Cinqo Ocho, why don't you get out on the mound 'cause I got something for you." To which Pap quickly replied with a shake of the hips and an "I've got your Cinqo Ocho" right here."
--The first two casualties of camp as Danny Kolb drilled Manny Ramirez between the shoulder blades during yesterday's batting practice session, and infield prospect Jed Lowrie and minor leaguer David Mailman ran into each other during a baserunning drill.
--Friend and colleague Rob Bradford shamelessly plugging his upcoming book entitled "Deep Drive: A Long Journey to Finding the Champion Within" to just about anyone who will listen at the Red Sox minor league complex. Just kidding Robbie B, but the book will be officially released on May 6 and I'm looking forward to reading about Lowell's amazing story of triumph. It's going to sit right on the Haggs' bookshelf with "Downtown" Ian Browne's tome on Daisuke that has already been released in the Land of the Rising Sun and Chris Price's The Blueprint-- an amazing look at the inner workings of the Patriots Way.

Also stretching out and getting ready to play Team Japan down at City of Palms Park in a media softball grudge match between the American and Japanese reporters. Got to love it!
