Where Art Delcarmen?

Let the record show that I thought the Eric Gagne trade was a good one for the Sox at the time of the deal (though I also thought a bat was necessary for this team to be dominant) and the idea of Gagne and Jon Papelbon closing out games for the rest of this season had to be a tantalizing one for Boston's front office. The one thing I did wonder at the time is how a Gagne deal would affect Hideki Okajima and Manny Delcarmen, a pair of arms that had performed well and continued to deserve spots in crunch time.

It's reasonable to assume that Okajima is tiring after pitching so many high pressure innings this season, although he did pitch 109 1/3 innings in the 1997 season in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants and 72 1/3 innings with the Giants in 2000. It should be noted that Okaji is entering territory that he hasn't crossed inning pitched-wise in more than five years.

It's not reasonable to assume that Delcarmen is tired or unwilling to pitch during the tight areas in a ballgame, and I for one would like to see him used in tandem with Gagne and Papelbon rather than fading to the back end of the bullpen.

Delcarmen has pitched only 3 2/3 innings since Gagne's arrival and everyone has been deprived of watching what we all saw in the ninth inning of the game at Camden Yards Sunday afternoon. The 25-year-old Pride of Hyde Park shouldn't be pushed to the back of the bullpen bus just because a shiny new toy in the form of Gagne has arrived under Boston's Christmas in July tree.

Here are some numbers on Gagne since July 1 courtesy of www.baseballmusings.com (one of my favorite sites), which should register some level of distress in Red Sox Nation and which doesn't even count Sunday afternoon's abomination:
