Things seem to be picking up speed with Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira, according to MLB.com's J.T. Sullivan, and the Red Sox are reported to be one of the team's involved. The real question here is 'what are the Red Sox going to have to give up in order to acquire a player that is headed for free agency after the 2008 season and has Scott "I'm expecting a mystery team to show me the money" Boras as an agent.

His arbitration figure would most assuredly be between $10-12 million for next season as well -- another consideration in any deal for the former Boston Red Sox draft pick (9th round of the 1993 draft out of high school). That's not even mentioning that a trade jettisoning Mike Lowell would also have to be part of the succession of dominoes.

Trading a guy like Lowell with the All-Star season he's having and the leadership he provides in the clubhouse would be a tough sell both inside and outside of the Yawkey Way offices. Heard from a fellow Boston media member that the notoriously media-wary Manny Ramirez, of all people, pulled them aside in the clubhouse over the last couple of days and asked them to put it out there that "Lowell's teammates don't want him to go anywhere."

Trade talks involving Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira have picked up considerably over the past few days, according to Major League sources.

The Red Sox, Angels, Braves and Yankees are showing the most interest, but the Giants have also inquired. The Dodgers have Teixeira high on their list of hitters, but have turned their attention to pitching.

The interest has picked up again as Teixeira has returned strong from the disabled list. He was 6-for-16 with a home run in his first four games since being activated on Friday.

Stay tuned as we've heard similar rumors about Reggie Sanders, Mike Piazza, and Javier Vazquez over the last few weeks...though it does also look like things have trailed off with Eric Gagne due to his desire to remain a closer if/when he gets dealt.

I also couldn't resist this nuggest from the CBS Sportsline Game Notes of a recent Cleveland Indians game...Have I mentioned before that RBI Baseball is the best video game ever invented? Because it is...

  • The Indians have had a season-long obsession with "RBI Baseball," the old-school Nintendo video game popular in the 1980s. Since Sunday, players and clubhouse staffers have been competing in a 16-team tournament, complete with seedings. "Guys are really into it," said pitcher Jake Westbrook, tourney director and resident trash talker, who isn't playing and has spent the past few days hearing teammates grumble about their seeds. "I'm brutal," he said. "The worst."
