I would be remiss if I didn't also mention the magic that is Cow Ripken between the third and fourth innings here at Hadlock Field in Portland. Ripken is a giant inflatable cow in a Baltimore Orioles jersey who rushes onto the field and shows off a series of dance moves to Michael Jackson's 'Beat it" The cow even gets the bat boy involved as they each bust off dance moves (think the rumpshaker and the cabbage patch) before Ripken does a belly flop-style tackle of the visiting bat boy on the dirt in foul territory. It may not sound that funny in my description, but it was wildly entertaining as I am a sucker for dancing cows. It makes you wonder about other possible dancing mascots that take their names from current or former ballplayers...can Moose Mussina or Rhino Sandberg be far behind?
Cow is just one example of the entertaining minor league show that the Sea Dogs put on here in Portland...something I was clued into when I got to the ballpark for an early interview yesterday at 11 am and there was already a line numbering in the hundreds waiting to get into the park. Good stuff.
